A Special Tattered Rose Customer

Customer loyalty seems to be slipping away faster than the click of the mouse these days so when a shop owner like me comes across a loyal customer, we are so appreciative that we feel the need to write about her (with her permission, of course).

Here she is in one of the many outfits tried on this week, as this wonderful customer travelled all the way from Saskatchewan to shop at Tattered Rose!

She first discovered our store when we were still in Winnipeg and she simply never forgot about us.  When she found out we had closed our Winnipeg location, did she give up?  No.  She found out if were still in business by "googling" us and then decided to plan a trip each year to do some power shopping at Tattered Rose, which is now located in Edmonton, Alberta!

I am always fascinated by her ability to scan the store, choose (seemingly) random items in colour palettes that are so beautiful, which she then layers together in outfits that even I didn't think of.

Thank you L. for your continued support and patronage.  Bricks & mortar shops like mine need more customers like you.

Paris Couture

OK...so we don't exactly have couture from Paris but we DO have beautiful, romantic clothing and jewellery, the likes of which are reminiscent of what you might find in a silent movie, a Paris runway, a French film......"The Great Gatsby" movie or even  "Downton Abbey".

Tattered Rose doesn't follow the trends but some aspect of what we sell always seems to be "in style".

Our Beautiful Duster

Yesterday was the first really nice day of Spring since it arrived amidst a snowstorm on March 21st.....I was in the back yard looking over a few projects of mine when I caught a glimpse of our beautiful boy looking out of the screened window.

I quickly ran into the house to grab my camera and took several pictures of Duster gazing up into the blue sky.  He is so beautiful! 
I wonder what he was thinking.....?

Dressing Down in Pink & Brown

♥ Brown & Pink are really pretty together, especially when there are roses somewhere on one of the garments.

Lately, we are lovin' the look of a t-shirt worn with an elegant maxi skirt.....makes it a bit more wearable for those of us who don't want to feel too dressed up, if you know what I mean. Plus, it's another way to wear more skirts and not feel like you're trying to hard to look like a girl♥

The Mad Hatter Toned Down a Few Notches...

It's strange....when the shop was located in Winnipeg, we sold hats and lots of them. People wore them to events and weddings...we also carried red hats for the Red hat Society ladies; however, since we moved to Edmonton, there doesn't seem to be the same market for hats, not at Tattered Rose, anyway.  Was it the time or the city? I guess we'll never know.

We will probably always have a few one-of-a-kind hats available now and then....mostly for our displays but often for sale upon request.

Coco Chanel Loves Her Jewels...

We just got some beautiful "new" vintage jewel necklaces in for the shop...and of course, Coco Chanel (the cat) was very excited at the thought of dressing up her plain grey & white outfit, even though, at first she pretended she wasn't really that interested...acting aloof and all:

 Then she decided to look at some of the different colours available:

Finally, she could contain her enthusiasm no longer....and decided on wearing the amethyst coloured necklace with the extra large stones:

These are just a few of the necklaces and earrings available...all are done with vintage crystals set in antiqued findings. These are substantial, weighty crystals that make you feel like you are wearing a part of history!
And they look so beautiful layered together or with longer chain necklaces...oh my!

Pink is Such a Pretty Colour

♥I don't wear PINK much any more (except for the pink boots I got) but I'd like to.  It is such a feminine colour and when you mix it with brown, grey or black you can get such different looks...from country romantic to urban explorer to big city fashionista♥

Black is the New Black

Those of us who LOVE wearing black and who wear it throughout the year are occasionally the object of gentle criticism for wearing "black all the time"......does that describe YOU (wearing too much black)?

 (this outfit would be kind of warm for summer, not to mention it's fur so that is a big NO-NO in our books)

 

I rarely care what people think of how I dress or how much black I wear, and I wear a lot of black even in the summer, so it is with mock relief that am reporting that this is the summer of permission to wear black, according to the fashion world.

We don't say you should be wearing heavy black wool coats or layers and layers of heavy black skirts....only for the comfort factor (they can be a bit warm for 30 degree weather), but if you want to wear black cotton, voile, lace, mesh, rayon, Sympli the Best jersey and such...go for it.  Don't listen to those around you who tell you that you should be wearing light or bright colours in the Spring and Summer.......unless you want to, that is.

Wear your black clothing, feel good in it and be happy you're not that person wearing lime green hot pants and matching tube top 'cuz that is just not YOU.

This is Tattered Rose

Sometimes when I am changing displays, the store can look a bit messy with clothing and props all over the place.  If a customer should walk in at that time, I have often apologized for the mess only to hear the customer say "What mess...I didn't even notice?"

So this makes me think that the name of Tattered Rose allows me to get away with a lot of stuff.....even the dust bunnies on the concrete floor when I haven't had the time to vacuum.....right? 

On Being a Farmer's Daughter......

I suppose that growing up on a farm and being the daughter of a farmer has shaped my life in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent not only to me, but to others who walk into my shop, Tattered Rose.

For one thing...I like old stuff, which I have mentioned before.  I like things that look like they've had a life before I acquired them....worn, faded, chipped paint....and rust, which I adore!  I've collected a lot of "things" over the years and for the past 2 years, have been selling much of my collection at the antique malls in town....currently with a booth at the Rocky Mountain Antique Mall.

The other thoughts I had on being a farmgirl is the clothing I am drawn to over and over...no matter how fashion design and living in the city of Toronto affected my taste for fine, beautiful clothing....I keep going back to the denim shirts worn with long skirts...and the denim overalls....and dusty old leather boots.
Is it any wonder that these influences find their way into Tattered Rose?

What began as a western store in 1995 has morphed into a very eclectic, bohemian, vintage-inspired boutique where any number of romantic styles of clothing sells alongside the more business-romantic look of Sympli the Best jersey clothing.

As much time that has passed since I closed my western shop, there always seems to be a hint of country, farmer's daughter, and western that permeates throughout the store known as Tattered Rose.  Some people notice it....others see the Victorian aspect and still others see Gothic.
I see "romantic" and for me, being a farmer's daughter is very romantic because it is real and down-to-earth.

Labels and/or brands are not the driving force behind Tattered Rose...it is all about the LOOK and the LIFESTYLE.....from the ruffles and lace to the vintage denim to the velvet, rayon, jersey, cotton and linen fabrics.....it all makes for a VERY eclectic array of goods....something for just about anyone♥

Thinking of You.......

Beautiful Paris Style Mirrors...at Tattered Rose

I love mirrors....old mirrors and old-looking mirrors.  Mirrors that are ornate or shabby...framed in old-world style, like they come from Paris.  Ironically, I no longer like looking at my reflection in mirrors but I DO love how they reflect the light in a living space, adding another dimension that captivates your imagination and engages your sense of beauty.

 Our new mirrors are SO beautiful.......you really gotta see them!

Sometimes I Wish I Were a Snowbunny.....

Yesterday, we had a huge snowstorm in our area and while I did manage to get to the store through all the snow and snow-covered streets, I decided to close early when I realized two things:

1. No one would be shopping on a day like that
2. I had to get home before it got too bad for me to drive

But...today it seems much calmer weather-wise so the store will be open it's usual hours of 11 am - 4 pm, with lots of beautiful things for you to see.

It's the second day of Spring....and it's snowing like crazy.  So we're just going to fake it 'til we make it, so to speak.
